CARMELO better known as Nick Carmelo is a Bass music producer/DJ. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia CARMELO now resides in Sydney, hosting a new Bass music event The Den alongside his co host Plu Mera. We chat with Nick about his new found name change from Nick Carmelo to CARMELO and what we could see from him in the future.
Hey Nick thanks for having a chat.
Hey Michael thanks for having me! I’m excited to be chatting all things CARMELO.
Tell us a little about your Carmelo project and what made you want to drop the ‘Nick’ from the original stage name?
So the CAREMLO project is focusing on heavy, HEAVY bass music. I really enjoy making ridiculously unrelenting and almost offensive sounds. The idea of the rebranding of the project is to display a more focused and clear direction. I wanted to drop the Nick from my original name because it signifies a new era of music. Much like the project, the name is focused and clear and overall more memorable. I also want to develop a new level of quality and sound that will be directly related to the new name. The old name held a lot of my earlier work which I want to leave behind as I move forward. Carmelo is actually my middle name which came from my late Nonno (grandfather). I like to think of the name a nod to his legacy.
What can we expect from Carmelo?
You can expect to see CARMELO (the monster) a lot! He is going to be on nearly every release if I can help it! You can also expect a lot of Tearout inspired tracks with a twist. I'm talking about hard hitting transients, expressive percussion, explosive sound design and a whole bunch of other buzzwords. As corny as it may sound it's exactly what I want to provide.
Why Bass Music? Where's your passion come from?
My encounter with Bass music was pretty late in my electronic music obsession. I only really started listening to it during university thanks to my partner and a mate of mine. I guess once I started to appreciate it my passion developed. I was hooked by the huge and expansive basses that were being created and I just wanted to do it myself!
Who’s your inspiration?
Funnily enough my inspiration for creating electronic music is Madeon. I have been a HUGE fan of his since he began producing and he inspired me to get started. Right now in the Bass scene people like JoeB, Evilnoiz, Leotrix, Oski, EVVDE, D'LION and of course SVDDEN DEATH are huge inspirations. All these people are pushing the sound of the Bass scene forwards and it gives me hope that I might be able to do the same.
What’s been the hardest part in your musical journey?
Self doubt hands down! It can be difficult to make your own music and then immediately compare it to your favourite artist. I do it all the time and it can be a massive roadblock for creativity. I think learning to be proud of your creation is key to moving forward creatively as well as maintaining an open mind so you can learn more. At least that's what I have experienced so far.
What do you have to say to your ever growing fanbase?
Thank you for supporting me! After that I'd like to say stick around because I have a lot of music coming that I really enjoy and I think you will too! I have a bunch of fun things planned and it would be amazing to have you join me for the journey.
And to the people who aren’t following you, what do you have to say to them?
Reach out and let's chat. I want to get to know more people and hopefully excite them with my music. I think the great thing about this community is the number of genuinely nice people and the support they provide to artists. I've met so many interesting people through this community so I'm eager to meet more!
